I had the good fortune of attending a matinee of this musical in 1970, while on vacation to NY. I waited at the stage door and met Melba Moore and Linda Hopkins who were gracious enough to sign my playbill. Ms. Moore was just starting out and was as thrilled to have supporters as I and my traveling companion were to be speaking with a 'star'! The show remains one of my all-time favorite musicals. It has a great score. It's interesting to note that the film of the play "Purlie Victorious" featured a then unknown actor named Alan Alda. And, please note, I believe the actor's name is Sherman Hemsley, and not Hensley as noted at your site. We recall him quite fondly as television's George Jefferson. |
